Obituary

Michele Rosemary (McDonald) James, 84 of Greenville, passed away on June 9, 2021. Michele was born on May 16, 1937, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Harry Joseph and Rosemary Agnes McDonald. Michele grew up in the steel town of Midland, Pennsylvania, where her father worked at the Crucible Steel Mill. As an only child, Michele was very close to her family. Like many people of her generation, she lived in a multi-generational household with her paternal grandparents. She was also very close to her maternal grandfather. She enjoyed taking trips with her dad to Pittsburgh for Pirates game and the like. She was a devoted fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and remained so to the end of her life. Michele attended a three-year nursing program at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, where she often treated injured Steeler players. She was an gifted registered nurse and worked at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington DC, the US Army Hospital in Augsburg, Germany, and for many years at the Sierra Vista Community Hospital in Sierra Vista, Arizona. She spent many years as an operating room and recovery room nurse. She took care of her patients the same way she took care of her family, with love, tenderness and competence. Michele raised three stairstep children as an Army wife. The family moved numerous times and she spent two years taking care of her children by herself while her husband was overseas. Through all of this she never faltered and was as solid a rock as you would ever find. She and her family spent many years overseas in Germany, Tokyo, Japan and the island of Okinawa. She was a skilled seamstress who enjoyed sewing and making beautiful articles of clothing for her family. Michele loved animals and cared for various dogs and one rabbit over the years. She donated to the ASPCA and the Humane Society her entire life. Most of all she cherished being a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother to her loving family who affectionately called her Gran. She will be remembered always by her family for the wonderful and caring person that she was. Michele is survived by her loving husband of almost 60 years. Jess James, children Jon James and wife Laura Bailey, Susan James-DeHaan and her wife Michelle, Judy Armstrong and Kevin Bower and by grandchildren Joseph Armstrong and wife Julie, Robert Armstrong and wife Makenzie, Jacob Armstrong and wife Monica, Jeb Armstrong and Julie Ortega and granddaughter Caroline James, and by great-grandchildren Cyson Baxter, Palmer Armstrong, Harbin Armstrong, and Jolee Armstrong.
