Verna Mae
Lay
Sep 28, 1932 — Feb 22, 2022
Verna Mae Hutsell Lay died peacefully on 2/22/22 in Royse City, TX at the age of 89. Verna is survived by her 4 Children – 3 Sons Bob Lay and his wife Brenda, Bill Lay, David Lay and his wife Cindy, and 1 daughter Barbara Monroe - 8 Grandchildren – Autumn Williams, Jessica Downer, Bridget Boyd, Bobby Lay, Nicole Hughes, Heath Lay, Ashley Lay and Kyle Monroe - 9 Great Grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by husband Roy Lee Lay of Royse City, and siblings Ralph Hutsell, John Hutsell and Shirly McCormack. Verna was born on 9/28/32 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Leonard and Birdie Hutsell. She graduated from Pampa High School in 1951. She married Roy Lee Lay in 1953 and moved to Alaska where her husband was stationed in Army to serve his tour. They moved back to Texas after the Army tour was served and the couple welcomed 4 children into their home over the next 12 years. Verna was set about teaching them family values and unconditional love. Her children remember her as a sweet, beautiful, kind, and dedicated mother and wife who encouraged them to pursue their dreams and be kind to all they encountered. Her grandchildren described her as the Hallmark grandmother. 😊 Verna was an exceptional baker who often shared her creations with others. She would bake numerous treats and candies at Christmas time and prepare "goody" boxes for friends, family, and neighbors. She often prepared 40 to 50 goody boxes while her husband would joyfully delivery them to all as if he was Santa Claus… LOL. She was a generous and dedicated individual who also loved cooking and was passionate about family togetherness and the meal preparation for all family gatherings. At Thanksgiving in addition to preparing the entire meal, she would also cook at least 15 or more pies, so everyone had their own personal favorite pie….we all had a different favorite …LOL. But that never bothered her, she would spend hours upon hours in the kitchen cooking and baking with joy in her heart as she knew she would have all the family together at one time for the feast. She was an active member of Paradise Baptist Church in Caddo Mills until her stroke in 2016. She loved the Lord with all her heart and would perform singing solos at church. She was a good example of what Jesus wanted us to be. She was a dedicated mother who always put her children before herself. She often did without so her children's needs could be provided. She had an amazing talent of making meals out of very little and always kept everyone's belly full. She would even make gravy and bread for the dogs when we could not afford dog food, no living thing would ever go hungry on her watch. 😊 Her home was built with love and her children were blessed to have been raised by such a wonderful loving and caring mother. A funeral is scheduled for Saturday 2/26/22 at Lynch Funeral Home in Caddo Mills at 2:00pm. Dr. Russell Rogers will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Verna's life. Condolences can be sent to lynchfuneralservice.com. The family would like to thank caregivers at Royce City Medical Lodge and Hope Health for their dedication to her care and support of her family during this difficult time.
