Walter Hayden
Truitt
Dec 3, 1929 — Oct 7, 2023
Walter Hayden Truitt was born in Lamesa, Texas on December 3rd, 1929, to Lee Roy Truitt and Willie McCarty Truitt. He was the youngest of four children. He passed peacefully from this world on Saturday October 7, 2023, surrounded by family and holding the hand of his wife of 68 years, Barbara Truitt. Walt was raised on the family farm in Dawson County, Texas and graduated from Lamesa High School. He worked as a farm hand and cowboy for local ranches until the time he enlisted in the US Navy. He served in Korea as a Petty Officer Second class, leading a Gun Crew and later as a pickup leader for frogmen operating in the theatre. When he returned from action in Korea, he met and married the love of his life Barbara and they had three children, Donna Elizabeth, Melissa (Lisa) Lynn, and Jay Hayden. Years later they moved to Vernon County, Missouri and started a cattle and farming operation in the Montevallo region. Walt was a successful pure-bred breeder of cattle and was one of the first individuals to bring purebred Beefmaster cattle to the state of Missouri. Later in life, he and Barbara moved to a new farm near Dederick, Missouri and they started a day-care for kids in the area. Over time, they became Nonna and Poppa to over 100 children. Known to many in the community as a cattleman and one of the last true cowboys, he was quick to tell you those were not his true loves. His first love was his Savior Jesus Christ, followed by his wife Barbara who he loved to his final breath, his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Denver Modine Jeter of Welch, TX; His brothers, Billy Roy (Bart) Truitt of Lamesa, TX and Banard Onacemo (Nace) Truitt of Lamesa, TX; daughter, Donna Elizabeth Walker; and grandson, Jayson Charles Truitt. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Barbara Truitt; daughter, Lisa Murphy (Mike) of Abilene, TX; son, Jay Truitt (Kathie) of Dallas, TX; son in law, Bruce Walker (Holly) of Bellamy, MO; bonus family, son Oscar Heredia Diaz (Janet), their 3 children, and grandchildren; 12 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild.
